What to Read to Cure Your "Onyx Storm" Hangover

I just finished Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros, the third installment of the Empyrean series that started with Fourth Wing, and I don’t know what to do with myself. Tired of fluctuating between staring at a wall and reading endless Reddit theories, I reached out to my IG audience to ask for recommendations for what to read after.

Note: I’m not a big fantasy reader, didn’t read it much growing up, yet because of both Fourth Wing and A Court of Thorns and Roses series, I’ve become a romantasy bookworm. Don’t give me fantasy without romance, especially a slow burn, yearning, bad-boy-with-a-heart-of-gold story. I am however a big reader, so if you’re into conversations about books and getting book recs, you’re in the right place.

Now here’s my collected romantasy / fantasy reading list, separated into two groups: Adult and YA (because sometimes I’m in a YA mood and sometimes I’m in a 🌶️ spicy mood). I included genre and additional series notes under each one for reference, but click on the link for publisher synopses.

There may be some additional notes or re-categorization needed as I haven’t read most of these yet, so I’ll update as needed (or feel free to kindly let me know in the comments!) The lists are presented in no particular order.

  Notes: The Nightborn Duet that’s part of the Crown of Nyaxia series, followed by The Ashes & The Star-Cursed King. Then there’s the following Shadowborn Duet, which includes The Songbird & the Heart of Stone and the upcoming The Fallen & the Kiss of Dusk (releasing August 5, 2025).

  Notes: a nine book, yet-unfinished series, so if you’re looking for something to dive into this might be good. The Blood and Ash series has 5 books following: A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire, The Crown of Gilded Bones, The War of Two Queens, A Soul of Ash and Blood. There’s a 6th book coming, titled The Primal of Blood and Bone, but no release date is set yet. There’s an extra POV book Visions of Flesh and Blood. There’s a prequel series called Flesh and Fire, which includes in order: A Shadow in the Ember, A Light in the Flame, A Fire in the Flesh, Born of Blood and Ash.
