Sunday Edition, vol. 5
Skincare, shoes, and cozy reads that are helping me through grief
The Sunday Edition is a bi-monthly column of 10 things I’m enjoying and inspired by.
These past couple weeks have been really busy with work and keeping up with our pets (senior and young). We unexpectedly lost our sweet kitty Penny, whom we’ve been parents to for nearly 14 years since the moment we found her and her siblings in our basement, so I needed a break last week. The following things really helped me through these hard times.
Hyacinths
A few of my good friends sent us flowers after Penny’s passing, and they were such a blessing in a week we had such heavy hearts. I’m so grateful to have such good friends. One of the arrangements included hyacinths, and I was surprised by how uplifted their beautiful scent left me. I hope it always reminds me of the love I felt from our friends.
The Best Cherry Pie Ever
For Pi Day (3/14), Ryan made this cherry pie recipe and it really is one of the best pies I’ve ever had. This has me in the mood for pie, and I have this Atlantic Beach Pie on Food52 saved to make next.
Project Hail Mary
I just finished Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir last week and it’s already one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. I’m not even a huge sci-fi reader, but it was so well written and the story was so compelling. We already have tickets for the Ryan Gosling-led film next week! (Don’t watch the trailer if you want to avoid spoilers).
Jennifer Tilly’s Favorite Things
Jennifer Tilly is an absolute gem on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. I love how quirky and fun she is; she’s definitely an icon and member of my Council of the Fabulous. I found this article on The Strategist of her Favorite Things - and I’ll be getting her perfect matte red lipstick (which is on major sale).Pet Portraits
In Penny’s memory, I’m commissioning a portrait of her from the brilliantly talented Vicki Liu. Art has a way to honor and heal.Cozy Romances
Going through grief is awful and shocking, and as it’s been a pretty rocky past couple years, I’ve learned to lean on a few things. I find cozy romances especially comforting during difficult times. I just read A Witch’s Guide to Magical Inkeeping by Sangu Mandanna and I’m almost finished with One and Only by Maurene Goo. Both have been salves for the heart. If you have more cozy book reads, I would love your recommendations.
Dr. Althea Relief Cream
All the stress recently caused a flare up in spots (yes I’m a grown adult woman who still gets acne, it’s incredibly fun /s), and I picked up this K-skincare cult favorite for calming skin. It’s been a miracle worker – I literally wake up to calm, smooth skin overnight.Colored Pencil Inspiration
I stumbled across this artist Jeanie Ahn’s gorgeous colored pencil renditions of bridal bouquets, and feel so inspired by it. It makes me want to break out my colored pencils and try something new!Tea Trays
Perhaps my solution is putting together cute tea trays? I stumbled across these videos and they are so charming. Recently I just got this Earl Grey Creme, which takes my love of Earl Grey to the next level.Tights + high platform heels
I’m a big clothes horse, and I’m just getting back into the swing of putting together outfits again. Re-defining my style at this age is definitely a trip. This recent Lana Condor photoshoot for PopSugar really inspired me though – I love the pink tights and silver platform heels! I already ordered the tights and have these dupes for the shoes in my cart.
